Coquille River Lighthouse

Located on the Coquille River near Bandon, Oregon. I find this particular structure fascinating  along with its easy accessibility. Coquille was once inhabited by the Coquille Indians. Built in 1896, the lighthouse provided warnings to vessels during storms and fog. It was abandoned in 1939. In 1976 the US Army Corps and Oregon State Parks renovated the structure. 

Located in Bullard's Beach State Park the exterior is accesible to the public. Whenever I visit the west coast I will make a visit here.

Seen More As Feminine

Over the past several weeks I notice people view me as a woman. When I'm with my wife, people call us ladies. I've had doors opened for me, called 'ma'a m, and treated with respect. I think that it's that I'm comfortable with myself and it shows in my countenance.

I'm really pleased about this development. I encourage others to go out in public and enjoy life.  

Celebrated Our Birthday Yesterday

Yesterday my wife and I celebrated our birthday. Our birthday is on the same day. We celebrated with cake and coffee at fellowship hour at church. Later, we went on to dinner. Many people ask how we get along? We get along great. I tease my wife telling her that we have no excuse to forget each other's birthday.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Taking advantage of the opportunities we have and pursuing our dreams was the focus this week. It's very nice to have dreams. It takes courage and perseverence to achieve them.

Every day each one of us has the chance to do something different that they didn't do before. The joy we may feel from helping someone else or achieving a goal gives us confidence and courage. This is something we should do every day. Unfulfilled dreams can leave a person frustrated, defeated, and bitter. It's never too late to do the things we have put off for so long. Delay no longer! Get going and pursue your dreams.

AUGUST IS HERE ALREADY

July went by very fast. Had two heatwaves to boot. Can't remember the last time that happened. August has started off rainy. Oh, well.

I was talking with my wife about composing a book of short stories together. I have written a few short stories with transgender people as the main characters.Writing positive and uplifting stories is what I aim to do.

My wife will be ot of town this Saturday so I'll be out and about. Don't know what I'll do but I will enjoy myself. There are some protests upcoming and I'm looking to see which ones I will be participating in.

Minot's Ledge Light

Located off Scituate, Massachusetts, Minot's Ledge was one of the first lighthouses built in the area. First constructed in 1850, the current structure was built in 1855 and complete in 1860s were lost . Previous to a lighthouse being built here many ships, property and lives were lost along the rocky coasts.

OPPORTUNITIES

Over the past couple of days I have thought about the opportunties each of us have. Each day we wake up there's a new chance to do something that we want to do. The main point is to take advantage of those opportunities. 

When my son was young, I encouraged him to do something that he is passionate about. He designs video games and is into web design. Now that I'm near retirement, I have the opportunity to the things that I really love. Writing is one of my passions, however I didn't have the confidence that I could be a success at it when I was younger. Well, later this year I will have a chapbook of some of my poems published. An opportunity deferred is now an opportunity to be realized.

Opportunity can be anything. It can be creating a recipe, traveling to a foreign country, building a piece of furniture, learning how to use a computer, and many other activities. Regardless of age or status people are taking advantage of the opportunity to do something that could change their lives.

WEEK IN REVIEW

I discussed everything from eunuchs to lighthouses to an anniversary. It was a very varied week in that life seems to be that way. I enjoy weeks like this because I'm usually out and about anyway. My sister had a heart operation this week (she's doing better). This kept things in perspective. Never tak anytingfo grante because before you know it something can be lost and never retrieved.

ANNIVERSARY

It was eight years ago today that I came out to myself as a crossdresser and transgender person. My life went in nother direction and it get better. the journey has been interesting and challenging at times. I wouldn't change anything that has happened.

A Young Sixty Five

I will be sixty five years young in ten days. Sometimes I have trouble convincing some that I'm my age. I see it as a compliment. Some might its a time for me to relax but I have no such notions. I will be aactive mre than ever.

I believe that learning is a lifetime endeavor. New experiences and thoughts can help shape our lives and make life worth living. I had a friend who was active and productive until he passed. I know a number of people who are the same way. Now I can do the things that I really enjoy and have a passion for.

My issue is that I have so many interests that sometmes I don't know where to star. It's a nice 'problem' to have, though. One of my goals is to get a master's degree in creative writing.  I will have a chapbook of poems published later this year. I will be going to support group meetings where I can help others with their gender issues. As you see there's much on my plate.

Many will be retiring soon however it's not the end of your life. New skills can be learned. New discoveries can be made. You have the skills and the experience to influence the younger generation. I may have retired from a job but not life.

My Love Of Lighthouses

One of my passions is reading the history of lighthouses. To me there's a mystical allure of an angel bringing light and illumination in dire situations. I can only image how many seafaring vessels were saved from a watery grave. Each week I will feature one lighthouse and a brief overview of its history.

The structure above is a mile from my home. It is simply known as the Little Red Lighthouse. Situated under the George Washington Bridge, it provided a warning to vessels on the Hudon River of treacherous currents and rocky shores. It stands at the crook of Fort Washington Park (formerly known as Jeffrey's Hook). Constructed in 1889, it has been at its current location since 1921. When the bridge was opened in 1931, the little red lighthouse was rendered obsolete.

There was a proposal of dismantling the lighthouse in 1951, but a public outcry stopped any such plans. Today, the light is a historical landmark and the only lighthouse in the New York City proper. 

A book about the lighthouse was written in 1942 by Hildegard H. Swift called The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Grey Bridge.

EUNUCHS

At the present time, I'm working on a project for my radio show in August. I'm doing research on eunuchs in the bible and throughout history. I reminds of the project I did on crosdressing and the bible which was insightful. This should prove equally as challenging.

Change Right Before My Eyes

The heatwave finally broke this weekend. It was the second one we've had this month and there's still August to contend with.

I can't remember the last time so much is happening our world in July. The economy is really bad and people are standing up and protesting. I'm also happy that there are grass roots organizations that are implementing paradigms which empower and give folks life sustaining skills.  I've grown herbs on my fire escape. I wish I had a garden where I can grow fruits and vegetables.

Protests

Since the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case, people all over the country have made their voices heard. On Tuesday evening my wife and I were going to a restaurant when we ran to groupof people protesting the verdict in the Martin case. About 100 or so people carried signs and listened to some speakers. Different areas of the city had similar protests. What's needed now is some action against the 'Stand Your Ground' law in Florida and the stop and frisk laws here in NYC.

JULY

It seems that after the 4th of July, life is less hectic. June is pride month and usually full of activities cultimating with the big pride parade. I don't mind the slower pace because me time to reflect on the successes and analyze the areas that failed.

I like July because I can explore nature in the parks and places outside the city. You can keep the heat, though. Give me 80 degrees yearround I'm happy. There's many film festivals, outdoor performances in the park, picnics, street festivals, etc. This begs the question; does life really slow down as the summer progresses? I guess it depends upon one's perspective.

TGLB and celibacy

My gripe is why does the gay or lesbian have to remain celibate? Celibacy is not a hard and fast rule in scripture. What is implied is that gay and lesbian couples cannot have the same happiness as hetero coples. To me this reeks of elitism and bias. I'm a married transgender person and I can only imagine some of the flak I and my spouse would get.

I graduated from a Christian college and it counsels gay and lesbian students in the hopes that they will 'repent'. I'm disappointed with the position of the president of Calvin College but he's entitled to his position.

Happy July 4th

As Independence Day is celebrated tomorrow, let us celebrate our independence as trans people. The day I decided to live as my true and authentic self was the day I declared my independence. No longer was I held down by the gender binary construct society said that I had to maintain. I never felt shame or guilt about who I was back then and I sure don't now. More of my transpeople have declared their independence, so let's celebrate.

Pride March

My wife and I went to the New York City pride march on Sunday. With the Marble Collegiate Church, we helped serve water to the marchers. It was a very humid warm day and the marchers really appreciated it.

There were more participants this year. More churches were represented in the march, which seems to be growing each year. I was happy to see this. This was my fifth parade, my wife's second. It was a fitting climax to a year of progress and victory.

Stonewall Riots- June 28, 1969

I watched documentaries of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. I was really moved by their stories and of the people they influenced. People who knew them spoke of their love, activism, and their spirit. Marsha is given credit for firing the first salvo that June 28th morning at Stonewall by her gay friends. Like Philadelphia and San Francisco previously, TLGB people in New York City stood for themselves.  

At times I remind some people that trans people, street people, and drag queens were the ignitors of a fire that still burns today. They were on the front lines, having nothing to lose. Transgender people are now beginning to stand up for themselves, having been burned by some people and groups who claim to be helping them (are you listening, HRC?).

Sylvia died in 2002 still fighting for transgender equality on her deathbed. Marsha was found in the river by the pier on Christopher Street in 1992 (the police say it was suicide, I say she was murdered). After her funeral her ashes were poured into the river by the pier. Twenty years later, I would do the same thing for a friend I had recently lost.

My transgender people, as we pause to remember this historic day, take heart that we were right there on the battle lines. Marsha and Sylvia are two of my heroines.Always remember the people who paved the way for what we have today.

A Lot Of Activity

It seems like things are moving fast for transgender people. I wonder if it's because it is pride month in many places that there seems to be much more activity. One aspect of al of this is the bogus criticisms of why we shouldn't have the same rights as everybody else.

DOMA was a dumb bill to begin with. Why don't the proponents of DOMA worked with couples whose marriages are struggling. Maybe they can teach prospective brides and bridegrooms what makes a marriage successful. Having been married 33years, it takes a lot of work and perserverance. When I came out as trans eight years, it seems that our marriage was strengthened. TO say that we can't be happy is nonsense.

Prop 8 shouldn't have come to this. Some people in major LGBT organizations blamed black folks for it passing in California and Illinois when in fact they never canvassed  black and Latino neighborhoods to begin with. 

There's till so much to be done. I will be workig to see that GENDA here in New York State is passed. We will be attaced on all sides but our presence is felt by many. I am hapy that trans activists have steped up and done their own lobbying.

Voting Rights Act Gutted

I was very disheartened when the Voting Rights Act was gutted of its protection. What galled me was some of the comments on why VRA was done away with. If someone believes that VRA is an outdated law, I wonder what was in the Kool-Aid they were drinking. States rights is the mantra being bandied about by conservatives and racists in some of these places. 

There has been much gerrymandering and redistricting all over the country. This is done to break the black and Latino voting block. I defy anyone to tell me that we are a colorblind society. Look at the prisons were the majority of prisoners are black ad Latino. Whose behind this latest assault on our rights: elitists on both sides who will do anything for a buck. Many people have died so I could vote, and I'll be damned if someone tells me that I can't vote.

SUMMER'S GETTING HOT-SO ARE TRANSGENDER TOPICS

With the recent signing of protections for transgender people in Delaware, this marked the seventeenth state to have such protections. Just a couple of days ago, a transgender woman was stabbed 40 times in  Washington DC. With the increase of visibility and recognition as people, we are being attacked on many sides.

I'm happy to be living in such a time because change is happening albeit slowly in some aspects. When I first came out many of these accomplishments were a pipe dream. Now all these things are happening before our eyes. People of color are making their voices heard fighting whitewashing, white privilege, and dismissal of their concerns by major TGLB organization. Transgender people are standing for themselves and making a huge impact. The backlash has been been vicious and the attacks brutal but we will not be stopped.

DISGUSTED

I am totally disgusted with the New York senate not willing to even discuss the Gender Employment Non Discrimination Act. It's been on the docket for over a decade now and there's absolutely no excuse for it not been passed. I wonder if they are taking their cue from the Human Rights Commission, who does not have fond feelings about transgender people. Remember when in 2007 they threw us under the bus?

I generally don't get upset about much of anything but this issue does. Marriage equality and GENDA were  on the same agenda the night the former became law. Everyone, including the organisations who are supposed to represent us, got caught up in the hoopla. The same thing happened when Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed. Transgender people were once again shut out. 

I'm researching places where I can become active in seeing that GENDA gets passed.  Too many people are suffering because New York State senator refuse to do the right thing. It's time for me to get busy and become an active participant.

Brighter Skies On Horizon

As children we all have an idea of what we wanted to be. Common answers were policeman. fireman, nurse, teacher, doctor or lawyer. Today it may be a star athlete, rapper, hedge fund manager, or entertainer. I have envisioned myself as a tutor, athlete, poet, world traveler, and a filmmaker. 

I related these thought to gender and conclude that there is more to each of us than we may believe. We are a dichotomy of two or more personalities. I find myself open to the challenge of discovering more about myself. I've always been curious about many things. Even now in my mid sixties,  have a child like curiosity about life. More and more people are seeking people who are authentic. 

My journey in gender expression has brought to another crossroads. At present, I've hit a dry spell but see brighter skies on the horizon. Where I will go to I don't know at the present time.

Still Seeking and Exploring

About this time every year I reflect on how far my journey has come. Well, it's still ongoing. 

Prior to coming out as a cross dresser, I envisioned myself as a stripper, a porno star, or a leather man. I doubt that I would have acted on the first two. I was fascinated with the leather culture. I did much research on the lifestyle but concluded that it wasn't right for me.

Within the past few days I wonder why these thoughts all of a sudden entered my mind eight years ago? It's possible that these topics were so deep inside that I never even considered it. Now as a transgender woman,   I see that my life has so many facets. I understand that gender is rather fluid, but so are other areas. Emotions? For sure. Sexuality? I wonder. 

I chuckle sometimes when others try to put me in a box of their choosing. Labels achieve the same thing. It can be a starting point, but I understand why many reject it. Boxes and labels don't reveal the whole of a person should never define who we are. There's so much more to me that I realize. I'm still seeking and exploring.

Transgenderism And The Church

These days religion and the TLGB community is a hot topic. It's because many churches and denominations are having to deal with the fact there are in fact TLGB members in their ranks. It's funny what denial will do until your confronted with it. 

It's bad enough that society ridicules people who are perceived to be different from the the majority. When you throw religion and the bible into the mix then you have a recipe for disaster. What gets me is that bible passages are thrown in our faces saying that we are sinners. Well, from my understanding of scripture so are the people who accuse us. Pulling scripture out to prove someone's own biases is a dangerous game in which many people have been harmed emotionally and spiritually.

I'm pleased that some denominations are taking this topic because it is great needed.  I have long advocated that the church and Christians need to be at the forefront of social change. I'm happy to be in a church which believes the same thing. Being active in the community and having an impact is a witness to those who may feel marginalized and isolated. There's much to be done and I want to be a part of that change.

Pursuing Your Passion.

Today, I encouraged someone on one of the forums tom pursue her passion for writing. It has taken me may years to believe that I could make an impact writing. Now I'm working on a chapbook of poems.  

I always told my son to find someone that he really loves then pursue it as a life work. He loves video games and wants to design them. How many people are really doing something that they love? Everything isn't about money, prestige or power. It is about making an impact on others around you. I have been writing since I was sixteen. I have read my work before audiences. If my work impacts one person, I'm happy. 

Pursue something that you really love. I am a radio show host on the internet and a poet. Nearing retirement I am at the point of doing activities that I love. This is a message I share with people, especially the young. Chinese philosopher Confucius stated: Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. 

This is so true.

Pause For Thought

Many opponents label the passage of bills for transgender rights as a 'bathroom bill'. They stoke fear into uninformed people that allowing transgender people to use public accommodations will endanger the children and women. Well,  these people shouldn't talk.

How come the military is sweeping over 20,000 rape cases under the rug? How come lawmakers have a hard time protecting women from discrimination, abuse, and exploitation?  Recently, a transgender woman was denied the use of a dressing room because the owner felt the customers would be uncomfortable. I saw through that ruse! SHE was the one who was uncomfortable. 

I'm not about changing people's perceptions because that up to the individual. I have and will speak out about their hypocrisy and lies. I wish that I could stand in front of these people and have them tell me why we are not worthy of the same rights as everyone else. I wouldn't tolerate the smug arrogance some of them have. People who know me know when push comes to shove, I'll tangle with anybody-and I don't care who they are.

Homage To Mother

As we pay homage to the mothers and the women who have influenced our lives, I have been reflecting on where life has brought me thus far. Mom had a big  influence on my direction in life. 

With her encouragement I was able to have the confidence to tackle difficult tasks. In times of difficulty she handled things with a grace that amazed me. It was this example that helped shaped for me the struggles I would encounter. What I remember most is the hospitality she showed to those who were lonely, depressed, or needed encouragement. It's probably the reason that encouraging others is one mission I have in life.     

My wife shared with me of a conversation she and mom had about my love of flowers and the color pink. I sometimes wonder if she knew that I would transition to Gennee? As we honor all mothers, let's remember that they brought us into the world. Maybe some of you didn't have the best upbringing or relationship with your mothers but remember you wouldn't be here either. Let Mothers Day be a day of rejoicing, remembrance and reflection.

The Beginning

It was about this time eight years that I first began to question my gender. It was the beginning of a quest that would lead me in a totally different direction. I would later discover how different.

I have been of the belief that life can take us into directions we didn't plan or seek. My emotional site was one of confusion. Here I was in my mid fifties and questioning if I was the person that I was supposed to me. The troubles began a few years earlier when I had this desire to 'break out'. The question was break out to what? I had no idea I had no clue what was trouble. That answer would be forthcoming in a few weeks.

Losing The Soul

Yesterday I was out with a friend at a flea market. We During one of our conversations we discussed how many neighborhoods are changing. Gentrification is surely changing the way the city looks.Condos, upscale restaurants with overpriced food., banks and drugstores on every corner. Being lost is the mom-and-pop businesses that gave life and personality to a neighborhood.

Everywhere I go, rows of store fronts sitting like empty sepulchers. I am for improving the neighborhood but does everything have to be so sterile? Neighborhoods are becoming less diverse and much more expensive. Everybody looks the same, thinks the same, and live in the same shallow environment. I have not lived in certain places because of this. I like personality and diversity, something that's being lost every day.

I am a lover of the arts, theater, film, and museums. I have long lamented that the average person cannot see a Broadway play because it is cost prohibitive. Seems that the almighty dollar by the greed landlords and developers trump whatever the community has in mind. Kind of sad.  Yes, the neighborhood may look shiny and slick but what does it mean if there is no soul there? If I want to find empty shells, I'll go to the seashore. At least they are beautiful and unique.

Being Authentic

One of the aspects of my life is to be as authentic as I can. When I made the the decision to be open about being transgender, in took into consideration that there would be opposition to the visibility transgender people are getting. I'm pleased that transgender people are taking more control of their situations.

While I haven't encountered any physical attacks, I'm aware that it could happen. I'm not afraid, just aware. The risk one takes by being who they are many. Then again that's what makes life worth living. Over two years ago, I started writing poetry. I started not to prove myself to others but to challenge myself. I have a much better understanding of this genre and the people who write poetry. I have written over a hundred poems. 

Being vulnerable can bring rewards as well as risks. One of the rewards is discovering that you can do things that you never thought you could. It was like that with poetry and now it's advocating for justice causes. I enjoy the moment that I'm in. Stopping to smell the roses keeps me in tune with life.

ENDA Will Be ReIntroduced On Thursday

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act is set to be introduced in both chambers of Congress on Thursday, according to multiple sources, but without major changes that were previously under consideration.

The bill will be reintroduced in the House by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), the most senior openly gay member of the chamber, who’s taking over the legislation now that former Rep. Barney Frank has retired. In the Senate, the legislation will be reintroduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.). The lawmakers’ offices confirmed they would introduce ENDA concurrently on Thursday.

The Senate version of the bill will have five original sponsors: Merkley and lesbian Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) will be two Democrats, Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) will be two Republicans and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) will round out the quintet.-washingtonblade.com

Protesting, Writing, and Educating

There is a slowdown after all the festivities of Easter. As late April approaches, life is picking up again. It seems that the older I get, the busier I am. I don't mind at all. If I can help someone I will. 

I will be out protesting about some issues important to me. I'm against all these wars. With what happened in Boston, it eerily reminds me of 9/11. The drum beat of war by media pundits and politicians are beginning to sound. I was in the service during the Vietnam War. I just missed going but I saw a fellow soldier a year later who was in my basic training unit. He was really messed up. what's really angering is that there are nearly a million homeless vets that the VA is doing nothing for. People need to be out there protesting.

I'm working on my first chapbook of poems which I may self publish. I already have a title for a future chapbook. I was surprised because thinking of titles has always been difficult for me. Go figure. There are some writing projects that I'm considering. 

With all the events happening I really have to do my homework. Thee's so much misinformation being put out there about everything that I can't take anything for granted. I guess this is part of my unconventional teaching. I do enjoy it. Well, time to get back to it now  

Milestone

I didn't realize that I made 1100 posts. Wow! I never realized that there was a lot to say or comment on. It's been quite a ride. I just pray that others were helped and encouraged.

Week In Review

I experienced two wonderfully warm days on Monday and Tuesday. A taste of summer in early April. By yesterday it was forty degrees cooler. Like I told everyone, that was just a tease.  I finished reading Selected Poems of Thomas Merton. I began reading the last poems of Robinson Jeffers. I'm amazed at the wide variety of styles and viewpoints about a number of topics by the authors.   

I began preparing a manuscript for my first chapbook. I have decided to self publish this one then get a publishing company for the next one. On Friday I moved my radio program to Friday night's at 6 PM. The program, Genevieve's Gems, talks about Godly things from the transgender perspective. I increased it from a half hour to a full hour. The hour went so fast! My wife and I attended a poetry reading event.


Reflecting on some personal aspects, I saw some positive changes in my life. The desire to be more open tops the list.

Summer Tease

I just have been enjoying the unusually warm weather the past couple of days. Yesterday, it reached 82 degrees.  I was out and about in the city. I arrived at the South Ferry subway station which reopened over a week ago. It was badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

It was the first time that I was in the financial district as Gennee. I got some looks but nothing happened. I visited a few of my old haunts. A couple of them have closed due to the economy. It was just great being out and being myself.

I took some time off from posting but now I'm back. I hae been reading, writing, and preparing to participate in upcoming protests. I will be attending a couple of upcoming book fairs, a poetry reading, and an investment seminar. As you can see, I will be pretty busy.

My radio program, Genevieve's Gems, is going well. Tomorrow, I will discuss the whole transgender spectrum. Someone made the suggestion to speak about this. I've been broadcasting for a couple of months now. I've always loved radio and now I have my own program.

Taking A Break

I took a break from posting (needed it) but I have been active reading, writing (a lot), and seeing some more journeys that I will take. I have noticed that the backlash against trans people is intense. A bill in Arizona is being considered to jail/fine people if they don't have ID to prove they are the right gender when using public restrooms. On a positive note, South Korea has passed a law stating that trans people do not need to have surgery to change their gender markers.    

Reading much has helped educate me about what is going on. I will respond to some of the events in future posts. I have written a number poems. I'm working on a short story and a prose poem. Looking ahead to April it promises to be an active month for me. I may not post as much but I will keep you up to date on my comings and goings. 

Brought Granddaughter to Church

Today I brought my granddaughter to church for the first time. In the beginning she was overwhelmed because she never been around that many people. In fellowship she began to loosen up. Everybody liked her and she was feeling her oats.

After service, I and another trans woman were asked if we would like to speak at one of our sister churches. We both accepted. I'll let you know the details when they come in.

Freedom Tower

This past Monday, I returned to lower Manhattan from a job interview in Staten Island. It was for a position as a visitors guide at the 9/11 memorial. I passed by the Freedom Tower (above) on my trek uptown. Even after all these years, 9/11 still has an effect on me.

 

TIme To Act

Today I read much news about many issues of the day. Even with all that's going on, it still boils down to whether people can come together and work to resolve those concerns. Egos and personal agendas need to be set aside. 

There is much bickering along ideological lines and belief systems. Through all this, those parties which do not have the people's interest at heart are further entrenching themselves. They are secretly working with federal, state and local officials to pass laws that they create to benefit corporations and not people. I'm currently looking at some future protests in which I can participate.

 Look at the folks in countries like Greece, Spain, and Italy. Unemployment is off the charts. People are eating out of garbage cans, and suicide is on the increase. They are out in the streets challenging the austerity measures put forth by these corrupt politicos and corporate heads. They are challenging the very people who caused this mess.  This is what is needed here in America.

Quiet Moments

 In those quiet moments, thoughts of where my journey has taken me fill my mind. I'm different and yet I didn't feel any earthshaking experience. This has been the way my journey has gone. I find these quiet moments rather refreshing.

I've always been a quiet and reflective individual. Quiet spaces for me is nirvana. An empty church, park, among nature. These thoughts are clearest when I wake up in the morning. This has happening with more frequency. From time to time I wonder if my being transgender was the fulfillment of a Native American prophecy.

There are those times I wish that I could travel by foot across the land. As a child I was fascinated by country roads and trails. I wondered where they would lead. Now in my middle years I still have that curiosity. Perhaps my transgender journey is an answer to this desire.

Window Shopping

I had just finished a job interview when I decided to windowship. I crossed the street and entered Payless Shoes. I was like a little girl as I oogled over the many wonderful styles and color-and in my size! I have to wear size 13 in a ladies shoe because I have a wide foot. I saw cream colored low heels, white heels, and aqua blue running shoes. Aqua blue! Right up my alley! 

Wisdom Of The Elders

I was chatting with an 85 year old member of my church. For nearly an hour, I listened as she shared stories of her childhood and young years. I marveled at the joy and wisdom she has about life. I've known Carmen only a short time but whenever she spoke it was from her years of experience.

One of aspects I believe is being lost is the wisdom of the elders being inparted on the young. I am a member of two cultures with  oral traditions. I enjoy listening to others share their experiences.

I am a nature lover and whenever I'm out in it I let it consume me.  As a child I loved venturing into the woods, against my mother's wishes. I have wondered if my being transgender was part of a Native American prophecy. The wisdom of others can serve as a reminder that we too carry the torch of being seers, shamans, and historians to younger generations.

HANGING OUT

Yesterday, I hung out at some of my usual hangouts. It's been a few weeks since doing this. Illness, terrible weather, and lack of funds contributed to this. 

I stopped by the community center then at the library nearby. I was tempted to take out another book but resisted the urge. Recently, a Barnes and Noble bookstore shut its doors. There are a number of business that have shuttered its doors because of increased rents. It's really a shame. 

I walked up the block toward Fifth Avenue. The building below was the old Marlton Hotel. Many famous artists and writers lived in single occupancy rooms. One of them was poet, critic and writer Delmore Schwartz (1913-1966). I read a couple of his books recently and found him a brilliant and troubled person. Today, the building is a dormitory for art students.

I visited a bookstore, a church, and a park that I hung out in during late 1960's and 1970s. I was no hurry and strolled leisurely. I do feel my spirit here in these places. It's only that spent some of my youth here but believe that I saw much creativity and authenticity in the arts and the many denizens of the neighborhood. I do miss those days. Much of this rich past is being absorbed through gentrification. I love sharing stories of my past. It's just me but I really    believe that young folks today really miss on on the positive and original vibes of that time.

It was a wonderful to be out and about again. One thing these excursions do is give me some great ideas for poems and short stories.

TRUE DIVERSITY OUGHT TO BE REFLECTED IN LEADRSHIP

Diversity is something that many organizations work hard to achieve. However when I look at the leadership of many LGBT  organizations, I wonder if I'm missing something. Many positions are still overwhelming white and male.

As a transgender individual I find this disturbing. The vast majority of transgender people abused and murdered are women of color. Whenever I read about the Stonewall Riots here in New York in 1969, I pleasantly remind some folks that it was began by a transgender woman of color and a butch lesbian woman. 
Within a year the leadership positions in many organizations were overwhelmingly  male, white, and middle class.Transgender people were shunted to the margins. Women formed their own groups. While there has been much improvement over the years, I believe in my heart that if equality was fought with the same fervor as assimilation, we would be much further along.

Yesterday, the assistant pastor spoke about diversity. The congregation reflects what diversity should truly be. In the leadership there is a black woman, black gay man, and a Latino man. There is a wide diversity of cultures, ages, genders and sexualities. I reflect on how diverse the early Christian church was. I'm not talking about tokenism either. 

In my opinion if the diversity in leadership positions doesn't change, then a golden opportunity to hear voices from other experiences and cultures will be lost. LGBT rights is not just an American phenomena. It's a worldwide one.

What I Remember Most About Martin Luther King

This Sunday we will be celebrating Black History Month. I am reminded of Rev. King and others sacrificed in time, material comforts, and lives. We remember his fine oratory, his vision, and his spiritual strength in a tumultous time in history.

What I remember  about Rev. Dr. King is the love he displayed in the face of hate and violence. He never shut the door on those who were oppressed or on his oppressors. He spoke out against those injustices with clarity and conviction. That clarity was most evident in the May 4, 1967 speech of his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Rev. Dr. King knew that a bullet could meet him at any time and yet he kept going. I admire him most for staying with the spiritual component  of the movement, something that is sorely lacking in today's movements. He was a minister and spiritual father to many near and far.

When Rev. Dr. King was taken from us we lost a man who brought people of all walks of life together. He's left a legacy and example that desparately needs to be seen today in our politically-correct, apathetic world.

MODELING

I have taken up some new activities. I have a radio show and am preparing to self publish a chapbook. The other day I thought about modeling clothes. Yes, modeling! Previously, I had no interest in it other than the clothes the models were dressed in. I do keep up with fashion trends. It's a crazy thought, one of my fantasies. It's quite possible that it could happen (never say never). Something nice to add to my my resume, if it happens.

SF To Cover SRS For All Transgender Residents

San Francisco to cover sex change surgeries for all uninsured transgender residents



The commentators at FOX News are going to love this one.

In 2001, San Francisco became the first city in the country to cover the cost of sex change surgeries for transgender city employees. In 2007, it became the first city in the country to provide health care for all uninsured residents through its Healthy San Francisco program.

Now, San Francisco is combining those firsts into yet another pioneering move by becoming the first city in the country to cover the cost of gender reassignment surgeries for its uninsured transgender residents.

The Department of Public Health has long been on the cutting-edge of providing medical care for transgender patients. It established a special clinic for them in 1994 and offers hormone   therapy, counseling and primary care services.

But the city’s health regulations excluded coverage for gender reassignment surgeries, and the department hasn’t employed surgeons capable of performing them.

That’s about to change thanks in large part to advocacy from the city’s Transgender Law Centerand Supervisor Scott Wiener who quietly introduced legislation at the Board of Supervisors over the summer encouraging the health department to remove the exclusion from its code. -SFGate

Transformation

I love the Lent season because it is a time to reflect about the changes in our lives. This past Sunday in service the Transfiguration of Jesus was preached from Matthew 17:1-9. Upon further thought, I realize that we are transforming every day.

Transformation may mean that some thing in our lives has been changed or replaced with something better. Several days ago I noticed more changes in my transgender journey. More of my male identity is giving way to a more feminine personality. This is something I never actively sought but the Lord rendered upon me.

There are things that I can give up during Lent but I believe that something good will replace it. When I decided to be the transgender woman I was created to be, many avenues opened up to me. New friends, new thoughts, a new direction. Above all, I was transformed and renewed by God.

No'Easter!

A big blizzard today. Have about a half a foot of snow so far. Windy and getting colder. My son and girlfriend are coming in from Washington DC by bus. Praying for their safety. Should end tomorrow afternoon.

Chinese New Year

This coming Sunday Chinese New Year will be celebrated after Sunday service. I attended last year and enjoyed learning much about Chinese culture and cuisine. There are a number of Asian people in church. I'm really blessed to know some of them.

January, I believe, is a 'chill' month after the Christmas season. Looking at my calender, things are picking up again. There's the Chinese New Year, the beginning of the Lenten season which culminates with Easter, and Black History month. 

It gives pause as to how diverse a world we are. I've always enjoyed this diversity and derive much pleasure from it. I still have that childlike curiosity about life. I'm open to many things because if one is too rigid in their belief systems, they may miss something that may prove valuable.

Gennee Makes Presence Felt

This past Sunday my wife and I went to visit a friend who was in the hospital. As we walked to the security desk I saw that we needed to show our IDs. I don't have a picture of me as Gennee. I wondered how this would turn out? I presented my ID with mymale picture. The guard looked at me for a moment, sowewhat startled. He gave us passes and let's us proceed.

We had to sign again when we reached my friend's ward. The lady with signed me didn't take a moment's notice. She just let me pass. Quite a day. Gennee is making her presence felt. My friend is doing much better.

Winter Interlude

Winter is probably my second favorite season. After the fading beauty of fall, winter is serene and quiet. The leafless trees whisper in the wind The parks and trails are empty. As a child I enjoyed being outside during the winter. 

To me, winter is nature's way of slowing down so we all can rest, reflect, and recharge. I am reminded that there's a warm place waiting for me. Taking pause to be thankful for what I have makes for a grateful heart.

Age No Barrier

Recently I've read some posts here and at other places that some feel that they are too old to transition or to make the changes needed to be the people they want to be. It's never too late to make positive changes.

Change is not easy but consider the alternative. Do you wish to be miserable and unhappy or do you desire to be happy, content, and full of vitality. Society will tell you that when you're in middle age, you're no longer productive or that you have nothing of value to offer. What gets me is that society thinks that we do not have the creative ideas or the desire to make change. Yes we can change and we can have an impact on others.

When I read posts I'm always happy for the success folks have experienced in their lives. I started cross dressing in my mid fifties. I returned to school at 54, graduated with a bachelor's degree at 59. I came out last June to my congregation as a transgender woman. I was sixty three. I know of a woman who transitioned at age 77.

Age should never be barrier to achieving your dreams. If you need to transition, do it. Do the the things that you have put off for so long. Be around positive people who will encourage you.

Happy Birthday MLK

On this day eighty four years ago one of greatest champions for human rights was born. Martin Luther King is one man that I admire because he stood up for the poor and oppressed. He demonstrated love and compassion in the face of hate and personal harm. 

Earlier today I listened to his speech done on May 4, 1967, comdemning the Vietnam War. A year later on the exact day MLK was assasinated. I have listened to a number of his speeches including the 'I Have A Dream' speech in 1963. I listened to his last speech on May 3, 1968. This and the Vietnam War speech resonate with me.

 Much of what he spoke about is happening today; racism, militarism, and social injustice. More MLKs are needed to speak out and change conditions in America. People in other countries such as Greece, Spain, Irealand, and Italy are doing just that. On this occasion let's strive to fulfill the dream that Dr. King sacrificed his life for.

Transgender patients seeking medical care face discrimination even in liberal, cutting-edge San Francisco.

But this being liberal, cutting-edge San Francisco, they also have a champion: Cecilia Chung, a transgender woman serving on the Health Commission.

Appointed to the commission overseeing the Department of Public Health by Mayor Ed Lee in April, Chung made news by pushing the department to pay for gender reassignment surgeries for uninsured transgender patients - making San Francisco the first city in the country to do so.

GOALS FOR 2013

Every year at this time I go about choosing goals that I will accomplish. I have three thus far. The first is to work toward seeing the employment non discrimination pass here in New York. The law has repeatedly failed to pass in the state senate. I want to see this change. It's been on the ballot for over a decade and enough stalling is enough.

Second, I will buy my first black dress. It is said that a lady needs at least one black dress in her wardrobe. I need to get two or three.

Third, I will get my certificates so I can teach/tutor. I'm not so sure about working in the public school sector but non profits seem appealing. 

That's three goals thus far. I'll most like come up with more as time passes.
