Split Rock Lighthouse-Minnesota
How often do you talk about a lighthouse located in Minnesota? Well, eastern Minnesota is on the shores of Lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse was opened in 1909 in response to the numerous shipwrecks near the coastline. Headkeepers oversaw the lighthouse from 1910 until 1961. Split Rock was decommissioned in 1969.
Today, Split Rock Lighthouse is under the auspices of the Minnesota Historical Society. It is the most visited site in the state of Minnesota.

Every year on the evening the lighthouse is lit up in tribute to the 29 crew members who perished on the freighter The Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975
