GENEVIEVE'S GEMS

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.

PRIDE

The definition of pride is a deep satisfaction or pleasure derived from one's own achievements. An example is when a sports team wins a championship. It is also being aware of one's own dignity. The danger comes when one's pride is used to denigrate others or keeping them from receiving help when he/she needs it.

Some may believe the pride parades trash straight society, however, that is not the case. This is people being happy with who they are where, once upon a time, they had to conceal their identity.

I have marched in numerous parades in the the past with different groups. I was pleased to be amongst people like myself, celebrating all that has been accomplished, thus far. Now that I'm a septugenarian, I am a spectator celebrating this particular occasion.

Pride, to me, was being liberated from what society said that I was supposed to be. It is a quiet and humble satisfaction that I can be my authentic self. I'm more happy about other folks celebrating than myself.

HAPPY PRIDE!

A MILESTONE

It was here that visited a church for the first time wearing women's clothing. It felt right. I forgot that there was a midday service so I stayed. During the greetings from other worshippers, there were greetings and smiles. No frowns or disgusted looks. There was no guilt or condemnation from God. It was okay 👍.  He was interested in me, not what I was wearing.

This is another place instrumental in my transition to become Genevieve.

CHRISTOPHER STREET PIER

I came here often during the early years of my transition. It was usually in the evening where I could be inconspicuous. I would stare out into the bay as the feeling of peace swept through me. I could be myself totally. It was here that I made the decision to live my life openly.

I come here a couple of times during the summer in the evening. The queer spirit is still there even though the surroundings have changed much. The piers will always be a part of me.

REMEMBER FOLKS WHO ARE STRUGGLING

Let us remember the LGBTQ+ folks who are homeless, depressed, addicted to substances, discriminated against, or lonely. Some may believe that their lives don't matter, but they do. Include them in our celebrations. Help them in whatever way we can. They are family also.

DILAPIDATED DUMP WHICH THRIVED WITH QUEER ACTIVITY

This is the dilapidated shipyards on the Hudson River near Christopher Street. I never hung out here, but passed by it many times. Queer folks hung out here, particularly on weekends. It was one place where gays, lesbians, queens, and trans people could be themselves.

Many didn't feel safe in their neighborhoods. Others were kicked out of their homes. At night, this place could be dangerous. Sometimes drugs were used. Some folks drowned having fallen ithrough the rotting planks and into the river. The old buildings are gone now.

I say to myself that people came to this dump just to live their reality. To them it was worth it. During this pride month, I paid homage to them. Whoever is still living, I pay honor to you.

PLACES OF TRANSFORMATION

During this month, I will be highlighting some of the places instrumental in my transition to Genevieve. Above is the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. I was here that I reconciled being transgender with my Christian faith. God embraced me as his child. This was such a life-altering experience.
