OSCAR WILDE BOOKSHOP (1967-2009)

I frequented this little if heaven whenever I was in Greenwich Village. They had a nice selection of books 📚 (not pornography) which highlight gay andlesbian history. They had a nice selection of sweatshirts (wish
I had bought one), tee shirts, candles and other artifacts. It was sad when they closed their doors for good. Another piece of LGBTQ history gone, but not forgotten.

GENEVIEVE'S GEMS

Contentment filled me the day I decided to live as a transperson openly.

STONEWALL RIOTS

I wasn't there on that hot night of June 28, 1969 (out of town). I returned to the city a few nights later and trekked right down to the Stonewall. The street was a mess.

Two things came to my mind. One, Greenwich Village wasn't poor by any stretch so something like this happening was unthinkable. Second, surveying the situation this was the start of some big. I was a twenty year old student at time.

Looking back, the folks who protested that night laid the ground work where I could transition without the thought of being arrested. Contrary to what some may or may not acknowledge, there WAS a trans presence there that night.

I am greatful to those folks who came before me. Many of them are not here but their presence is felt by me and others.

ST. MARKS PLACE

St. Mark's Place in the East Village was one of my main stomping grounds. There were small shops, music venues, cheap food, and excitement in the air.

Looking back this bohemian hub was an introduction to how my life transition would unfold. Being different was okay. Many of my favorite place are long gone, but the memories of those times will last forever.

GENEVIEVE'S GEMS

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.

PRIDE

The definition of pride is a deep satisfaction or pleasure derived from one's own achievements. An example is when a sports team wins a championship. It is also being aware of one's own dignity. The danger comes when one's pride is used to denigrate others or keeping them from receiving help when he/she needs it.

Some may believe the pride parades trash straight society, however, that is not the case. This is people being happy with who they are where, once upon a time, they had to conceal their identity.

I have marched in numerous parades in the the past with different groups. I was pleased to be amongst people like myself, celebrating all that has been accomplished, thus far. Now that I'm a septugenarian, I am a spectator celebrating this particular occasion.

Pride, to me, was being liberated from what society said that I was supposed to be. It is a quiet and humble satisfaction that I can be my authentic self. I'm more happy about other folks celebrating than myself.

HAPPY PRIDE!

A MILESTONE

It was here that visited a church for the first time wearing women's clothing. It felt right. I forgot that there was a midday service so I stayed. During the greetings from other worshippers, there were greetings and smiles. No frowns or disgusted looks. There was no guilt or condemnation from God. It was okay 👍.  He was interested in me, not what I was wearing.

This is another place instrumental in my transition to become Genevieve.

CHRISTOPHER STREET PIER

I came here often during the early years of my transition. It was usually in the evening where I could be inconspicuous. I would stare out into the bay as the feeling of peace swept through me. I could be myself totally. It was here that I made the decision to live my life openly.

I come here a couple of times during the summer in the evening. The queer spirit is still there even though the surroundings have changed much. The piers will always be a part of me.

REMEMBER FOLKS WHO ARE STRUGGLING

Let us remember the LGBTQ+ folks who are homeless, depressed, addicted to substances, discriminated against, or lonely. Some may believe that their lives don't matter, but they do. Include them in our celebrations. Help them in whatever way we can. They are family also.
